My Article: Vintage Port, Cuban Cigars, and Anticipation

LONDON (DEC. 12, 2010): Last night went on pretty late. I was at football, then dinner, and finally cigars and Vintage Port at the Lanesborough Hotel. The Lanesborough is one of the best venues on earth to smoke cigars.

One observation: London rocks for things like cigars and Port. It’s a tradition despite such traditions being attacked by everyday rules and regulations. The British still find a way to enjoy such good things in life.

When we arrived at the partially enclosed outdoor facilities of the Lanesborough, music from Frank Sinatra was playing and the subtle and sweet smell of Cuban cigars was in the air. I ordered a couple of glasses of 1970 Warre. The Vintage Port was surprisingly delicate and fruity at this stage. It was ready to drink with a lightly sweet fruit, raspberry, and dark berry character and a bright acidity – 91 points.

I smoked an H. Upmann Magnum 50 that showed a creamy texture with tea and cappuccino character. It was full and soft — 92 points. My friend’s Romeo & Julieta Wide Churchill was better with sandalwood, dried flowers, and a delicate tobacco character. It is a new smoke for this year from Cuba, and the thicker robusto really delivers. I scored it 93 points.

I left after the finishing the smoke, in anticipation for my weeks work in Bordeaux tasting the 2008 in bottle.  It somehow seemed even more attractive after a special evening in London.
