Top 5 Burgundy wines of 2019

James tasting at the Olivier Leflaive cellars 2019 with Franck Grux

James tasting at the Olivier Leflaive cellars with chief winemaker Franck Grux.

Our list of the Top 100 Wines of France tasted during 2019 was, perhaps unsurprisingly, dominated by Bordeaux. More than 60 of the 100 were from France’s most popular wine region. So where did that leave Burgundy?

Burgundy producers continue to ramp up their prices each year, making these bottles harder to buy. For that reason, the tasting team at JamesSuckling.com tends to prefer better value wines that are more accessible to a wider market. However, Burgundy we know has many passionate fans, and we did taste some fantastic bottles last year.

We tasted more than 600 wines from the 2017 vintage, which proved to be a mixed blessing, with some producers appearing to struggle to adapt to the comparatively bountiful harvest compared to years past. Other producers however came through with delicate and fragrant reds, and high quality and concentrated whites.

Below we have pulled out the Top 5 Burgundies we tasted last year, to give these excellent wines some exposure. As well as four 2017 bottles, we also include one 2016, which was a vintage that produced beautifully precise wines.
