Tasting Report: Prosecco Wines

28 Tasting Notes

Prosecco, the sparkling white wine produced in north-eastern Italy, is one of the hottest wine categories in the world at the moment and particularly in Asia. The small selection reviewed below is available in China and Thailand as well as North America.

Its popularity may be a result of its reasonable price compared to Champagne or other sparkling wines since it is usually half the price of Champagne and Italian sparkling wines. It also offers a unique drinking experience. Or maybe it’s because of the light and fresh style of Italy’s popular sparkling wine spumante. Plus, who doesn’t like a Bellini, the blend of prosecco and fresh peach juice?

Whatever the case, prosecco can be wonderful to drink, especially as an aperitif, if you know the right names. James tasted dozens of proseccos this summer in Italy, and there are quite a lot that are dry and refined, and not just run-of-the-mill sparklers. Producers such as Nino Franco, Zardetto, Silvano Follador and Pitars made some exciting proseccos. Get them!

The Zardetto Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Superiore X Extra Dry N.V. is one of the best proseccos James has tasted. It shows “what prosecco can be,” as James comments in the tasting note. The Nino Franco Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Superiore Brut N.V. is a great aperitif. Another example of excellent prosecco is Silvano Follador’s Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Superiore Brut Nature N.V. The wine has intense lemon and citrus notes, and is really a superb prosecco, writes James in the tasting note.

Below are all the wines tasted by James this summer, arranged by scores; click on the names for tasting notes and scores.

An odd (and limited) selection of wines. Highly recommend you taste the wines from Colli del Soligo at some point.

I will be tasting more in the New Year. Please send some of your recommendations. I focused mostly on prosecco available in such Asian markets as China and Thailand.
