Acker Merrall & Condit, America’s oldest fine wine merchant and leading wine auctioneer, held an impressive series of auctions at the Grand Hyatt between December 6 and 8 that culminated in 76 new world records (16 of which were for Italian wines) and a total value of over HK$61million racked up throughout the course of the sales.

John Kapon, the CEO of Acker Merrall & Condit (pictured above), hosted the sale, and commented that it had been “an amazing week for Hong Kong wine lovers.” He also noted that “the results for Italian wines were quite noteworthy, led by the direct consignment from its most important producer, Gaja”.

This exceptional direct consignment from Gaja stirred plenty of interest from oenophiles and collectors. The estate’s co-owner, Gaia Gaja, attended the Thursday evening auction where the lots sold for prices that surpassed their initial high estimates. Several rare offerings fetched the highest prices, such as a 24-bottle vertical of Sori San Lorenzo Barbaresco which sold for HK$98,400; and a 12-bottle vertical of Gaja Barbaresco that pulled in HK$83,640.

This particular consignment also included a unique offering of wines that had been a part of the Great Wines of Italy event hosted by Hong Kong Tatler and James Suckling at the Island Shangri-La just a few days prior. Some of the more significant lots included:

– The Great Wines of Italy Superlot, comprising 236 rare bottles from various wineries, with a combined value of HK$68,880- Six bottles, one magnum and one double magnum of 1997 Solaia from Antinori, with a combined value of HK$36,900- 24 bottles of 2001 Pianrosso Riserva Brunello from Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, with a combined value of HK$31,980

Another major highlight of the evening was the auctioning of a DRC assortment vertical of eight great vintages, which went for an awe-inspiring HK$2,755,200 under the hammer.
