I recently arrived in the picturesque village of Gigondas, nestled under the Dentelles de Montimiral in southern Rhone, and it revived some recent tasting memories. Before leaving, while in Hong Kong, I was stunned by the Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Le Claux 2022.
Chateau de Saint Cosme is an iconic producer of the appellation under the lead of the talented Louis Barruol, whose family has owned vineyards in the area since 1490. He has produced remarkable wines that meld intensity, energy and agility.
Gigondas has somewhat of a reputation for producing ripe and muscular wines, but in reality its variety of terroirs – especially its sloped vineyards – translate into wines with balance, elegance and character.
Les Claux, which is based on very old grenache on limestone marl, is one of them. It showcases a robust profile yet it has so much floral expression – think aromas of wild berries, orange peels and dried flowers mingling with a load of spices, bringing plenty of energy and vitality. It’s also juicy and vibrant at the center, and there is lots of purity here from the old-vine grenache.
