One more reason to be in Bordeaux next week

If you’re going to be here in Bordeaux for VinExpo, or even if you’re not, you may be interested to hear about a fascinating evening next week at Chateau Brane-Cantenac.

Subscribers may already be familiar with Eric Boissenot, the famous wine consultant who together with his father Jacques, has been instrumental in creating some 190 top Bordeaux in the Médoc – in addition to Brane-Cantenac, these include Latour, Lafite Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild, Margaux, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville-las-Cases, Pichon-Baron and Pichon-Lalande.

Yet it turns out Boissenot is also a highly accomplished photographer, and this Monday at 7pm, attendees will get their own chance to combine a love of wine with art when Jamie Ritchie of Sotherby’s auctions 32 exclusive black-and-white photographs of Chateau Brane-Cantenac for charity Solidair in their huge tasting room. Some of the most recent Brane-Cantenac vintages will be poured over the course of the evening, while various rare bottles and cases are also included in the auction (including a 1983 double magnum).

And there’s no need to worry just where exactly the proceeds are going – disgruntled with dishonest intermediaries and custom officers, founder of Solidair Doctor Philippe Chastan now individually flies hi-tech medical equipment, tools, and vital medicine out to Mali, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia with a team of three other pilots.

Below are some of the alluring images for sale in the “Brane Vu Par Eric Boissenot” (Brane seen through the eyes of Eric Boissenot) catalogue. More information and absentee bid forms can be obtained by clicking here or by contacting Corinne: [email protected].

Among others, a Rolleiflex 3.5f, Leica M3 and Graflex I believe. He also uses a technique called "Zone System" - famously formulated and used by Ansel Adams - which is what really brings out what he's focussing in on of the Chateau...

It's all film. I took lessons as a young man from Ansel Adams and was a great proponent of the Zone System. I still have three Leicas including a M3 and M6.
