I was really psyched for Wimbledon today. I was taking time off up in York, England, to see my children at my ex-wife’s house, and my son Jack and I were ready for the final. We were sure that Nidal would slaughter Djovoic. Of course, we were dead wrong. Djovoic played wonderful tennis.
Before the match, I was thinking about what would be the right wine to kick back with on a hot English summer’s day and watch the tennis. German Kabinett immediately popped into my mind. More specifically, a racy and crisp Mosel Kabinett seemed the ticket.
I drove over to Waitrose to get some food for lunch for the family and I went into the wine section and found bottles of 2009 Dr. Loosen Riesling Kabinett Urziger Wurzgarten. I grab one and paid about $17.
I got home, chilled it and drank a glass with my ex with smoked salmon and a salad of tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. It was bright and fresh and delicious. It showed such beautiful fruit. I screwed the cap back on and left the rest for the match about an hour later.
The wine was so good for the four-set match. It had a beautiful intensity of pears, melons, and minerals on the nose and palate. It was delicately off dry with a lively acidity. Loved the minerally undertones to it. 90 points.
It sipped the wine through the match and marveled at its pleasure-giving and crispness. And it was only 7.5% alcohol – half the alcohol of many New World whites such as Chardonnay.
I am buying a number of German Rieslings for the summer.
