My Article: 2010 the Ride of a Lifetime for a Wine Critic and the Dry Whites!

Everyone seems to be getting excited about the quality of the reds in 2010, and I am getting tons of requests for notes and my thoughts on the vintage. That is super exciting for me considering I have been doing this for 28 vintages in Bordeaux. I keep thinking back to all the years I have tasted from barrel and how this new vintage impresses me.

There are some really amazing wines! They are really stunning.

But something some people may have not thought about are the dry whites in 2010. I just tasted the whites from La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion and I was absolutely speechless.

The HB blanc 2010 is the one. I can’t get over how the wine has so much concentration and richness, yet it remains fresh and bright with an insane amount of electrifying acidity. It is literally a tongue twister to taste. It turned my palate upside down, but in a good way. It is like falling for religion or something. Mind-blowing. How could it be better than the 2005 Haut-Brion blanc, because I already gave it 100 points? But I think it will be.

I went to Ausone and Petrus afterwards and the “Pet” was stunning. The chateau asked me not to print my tasting notes until April 4. So I won’t comment other than it is on the same level as 1989 Petrus.

My 2010 Bordeaux Road Trip is turning out to be one of the rides of my life as a wine critic. Hold on to your seatbelt.

Nice blog, James! The last 10 days have been terrific. I'm learning much about Bordeaux, so "Thank You" for the great wine education. Can hardly wait for the next Roadshow! By the way, I absolutely love your entire wine-review team of James Orr, Pierre, Jessica, and Ned. Totally a FIRST RATE TEAM!!!

It's sounding like '10 might be a well-rounded vintage for reds and whites, just like '05 and '89. I wonder how the sweeties will be....
