Upon the release of the new Gran Selezione designation, San Fabiano Calcinaia attained the joint highest score James has ever awarded a Chianti Classico: 97 points.
The wine in question comes from selected grapes of the estate’s Cellole vineyard, a 14-hectare plot of land dedicated to sangiovese situated in the Castellina in Chianti area. Thanks to a particularly warm microclimate and some restrained use of aging in barrique, lauded enologist Carlo Ferrini makes opulent but instantly mouthwatering reds – not just under the Chianti Classico designations. Their Super Tuscan Cerviolo, for instance, is a deeply colored and flavored blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. It’s also worth pointing out that despite increased public attention, the winery has kept prices down, meaning their whole range offers phenomenal value for money.
Its regular Chianti Classico in particular is a great value. Its recent vintages are consistently rated 90 points or above by James, yet averages below $20 a bottle, according to Wine Searcher. Its 2012 vintage is outstanding quality with rich aromas of chili pepper, iron and dark cherry with hints of lemon, writes James.
