German entrepreneur Georg Weber only recently created the Tuscan wine estate Monteverro, with the first vintage being in 2008. But the winery, tucked in the Maremma region, near the town of Capalbio, is already jockeying for a seat in Italy’s powerful Super Tuscan sanctum.
A wine lover and extensive wine collector, Georg Weber’s heart is set on producing world-class wines at his 50-hectare estate. Producing both reds and whites from his 27 hectares of vineyards, his namesake flagship wine Monteverro, a Bordeaux blend, delivers consistent quality, from its inaugural vintage to its latest 2012 vintage. Back when James first tasted the 2008 vintage, he already predicted the rise of the winery and prophetically wrote that it was “a new producer to watch from Tuscany,” although the 2008 is a bit over-extracted compared with the 2009 vintage.
The 2009 vintage, on the other hand, turned out to be a tremendous red – dense, rich and velvety. By 2011, the red was already much acclaimed. James spoke highly of the vintage and commented, “2011 is the best vintage ever from here, considering both reds and whites.” The red, in particular, was praised by James as “one of the richest Tuscan reds out there.”
The 2012 vintage did not disappoint either and lived up to its expectation. The wine is balanced, delicious, long, precise and refined with beautiful aromas, wrote James in the tasting note. The wine will be on pour at our Great Wines of Italy events in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco in February. Click here to get your tickets to taste this superb red.
In addition to the namesake red, the winery also makes a fantastic Rhone blend called Tinata, and the barrel-fermented chardonnay can also be superb. World-renowned consulting enologist Michel Rolland oversees production but it’s the dedication of Weber who is leading this winery.
