Mini-Vertical Tasting of Poderi Aldo Conterno
This is one of the most impressive wine estates in all of Italy—perhaps in the world. From its great vineyards in Barolo, Poderi Aldo Conterno makes some of the most exquisite red wines on the planet.
It was all part of the dream of the late Aldo Conterno, who died in the spring of 2012. He established the estate in 1969, having left his father’s winery, Giacomo Conterno, in the hands of his brother. Poderi Aldo Conterno is now under the helm of Aldo’s sons: Franco, Stefano and Giacomo. Conterno’s three Barolo vineyards (Cicala, Colonnello and Romirasco) are in Bussia and each has its own unique style.
Recently, Romirasco has been showing incredibly well, but Cicala, which “always has an attractive freshness and firmness,” says James. The 2011 vintage is the best recent vintage, better than the highly rated 2010. The wine is also available for tasting at our Great Wines of Italy event in Hong Kong and Bangkok, so be sure to try it out.
