Following the sell-out success of GREAT WINES OF THE WORLD in Hong Kong for the last three years, the event will come to Beijing for the very first time. And, for the first time ever, the event will be hosted in partnership with COFCO W&W, China’s state-owned company and the leading wine merchant in the country. The Grand Tasting will showcase more than 160 outstanding wines from the world’s leading vineyards and boutique wineries. All wines have been hand-picked by James Suckling and have achieved scores of 90 points and above.
Producer Spotlight: Ao Yun |
Shangri-La, as mentioned by James Hilton in his novel Lost Horizon, is a mystical and harmonious place. The high-altitude vineyards of Ao Yun — some of the highest in the world — attracted Moët Hennessy because of its relatively mild climate and intense sunlight. The rainy season is much less intense than other wine areas in China like the Shandong Peninsula. Winters are not as extreme as the Ningxia area, where vines must be buried under the earth to survive the severe cold.
The 2013 Ao Yun Shangri-La is the best Chinese wine I have ever tasted. The blended red, which is cabernet sauvignon with a touch of cabernet franc, has the structure and backbone comparable to top reds from around the world. It’s wonderful to drink now but will be even better in three to four years when the firm tannins soften. Ao Yun 2014 will be featured at the upcoming Great Wines of the World Beijing.
