Following last week’s great run at Petrus, James continues his hunt for economical quality wine at some of Hong Kong’s top restaurants. This time he heads over to Spoon by Alain Ducasse, the French restaurant at InterContinental Hong Kong for his latest round of The Wine Challenge. In the video, Suckling is surprised to see that one of the two white wines handpicked by chief sommelier Nicolas Deneux is a sparkling, but the rules of the challenge remain the same. Each wine must be:
– priced under HK$1,000 per bottle – available for purchase at the named restaurant – score 90 points or above
James then gives his own points for the wines selected and chooses a winner.
In this challenge, James is presented with two bottles of white wines: Agrapart & Fils Champagne 2005 (read note) and Tesch St. Remigiusberg Riesling 2009 (read note). The wines are paired with the truffled bresse chicken breast and white drumstick sausage, from Spoon by Alain Ducasse.
Watch the video above to find out the wine scores given by James and why Deneux chooses Champagne and a white wine instead of the obvious red Burgundy for the challenge.
