Great Wines of Andes 2017 Was A Blast

SF

It’s hard to remember more dynamic wine tastings than this year’s Great Wines of the Andes USA events last week in New York, Miami and San Francisco. To put it bluntly: It was a blast.

The close to 2,000 people who attended the events were full of smiles and Lalique glasses brimming with excellent wines. This, combined with the excellent venues and the music of Surahn Sidhu, the former guitarist of the band Empire of the Sun and now Flight Facilities, made for a memorable occasion to say the least.

Great Wines of the Andes almost didn’t make it to Miami this year following the devastation left by hurricane Irma. However, Miami’s wine drinkers came out in force to EAST Hotel for what was arguably the tour’s coolest stop. Following the event, JamesSuckling.com donated $12,000 to Feeding South Florida to help with relief efforts. We love Miami!

James’ message was simple throughout the trip — great wines don’t have to cost a lot of money. And Chile, Argentina and Uruguay are great wine producers at reasonable prices.

The event was called Great Wines of the Andes, but it also included a new winery from Uruguay, which is not technically the Andes. “The turnout was amazing,” said Magdalena Sosa, brand ambassador for Bodegas Garzón. “I have never had so many people excited to taste our wines. We went through all the wines by the end of the event.”

The consumption was indeed impressive as people lined up for special wines, particularly the three 100-point Chilean wines: Almaviva 2015, Clos Apalta 2014 and Seña 2015

Yet so many excellent wines were served from stony whites like the Catena Zapata Chardonnay Mendoza Adriana Vineyard White Stones 2014 to the wild and exotic red of Montes Carmenere Valle de Colchagua Purple Angel 2014.

Here is a list of wineries who attended the event. We hope to see you next year at the Great Wines of the Andes at the end of September 2018, if not before for our Great Wines of Italy tour in early March 2018!
