Today I was tasting some 2009 Bordeaux that I wasn’t able to taste in January, and just about all the wines were outstanding, or 90 points or more. They weren’t all from top appellations such as Pauillac or St. Emilion, but many were just simple Bordeaux or Bordeaux Supérieur.
I loved the ripe fruit and fresh acidity of the wines. I scored many 90 to 93 points. Check out my 2009 tasting report if you haven’t seen it.
This truly is the magic of the vintage. It is why 2009 is one of the greatest vintages ever. Great vintages are when just about every wine produced, from the smallest appellations to the grand ones, are very good to superb quality.
I was thinking about this today at lunch with some friends at their house in Bordeaux over some cold cuts and green salad, with a glass of one of the wines I scored outstanding in the tasting: 2009 Le Bord’eaux du Clos des Moiselles Merlot. It showed ripe berries with hints of prunes and chocolate and spices. It was tannic and rich. But it was fresh and delicious. It was so more-ish. You wanted to drink it even though you knew it would be better in a few years.
I have to go now and taste some 2011 barrel samples. I don’t think it is going to be the same experience.
Did you get to re-taste the 09 Godeau? Curious to hear your impressions!
