James and I both really enjoy drinking Chablis and we were recently talking about the great value and drinkability that the 2017 Villages wines continue to offer. We loved these wines when they were released and they are wines we continue to seek out when we are on tour tasting, as much as they are wines we stock at home. They deliver such purity, refreshment and are just always so enjoyable.
And so we thought we’d highlight five of our favourite 2017 Chablis Villages wines that represent both great quality and great value. The 2017 vintage is one that combines a great deal of drinkability and a great deal of power and structure and the wines have showed well on release. They are pristine, very fresh and they have plenty more in the tank. They offer a style of drinkability that feathers a line of fleshiness and juiciness as well as taut resolve.
As detailed in our tasting report that covered the 2017 vintage in detail, lower crops of up to 30% had the upside of driving quality in most cellars. In the Chablis Villages wines these lower yields pulled the wines into keen focus and the best examples combine impressive concentration with taut acidity. The net result is intensity of flavor, mouth-watering freshness and high drinkability across a range of styles and approaches.
2017 is a classic vintage for Chablis and these are some of the best value white wines of recent times.
