France is arguably the world’s most esteemed wine nation. It does not produce as much wine as Italy, but what it does produce is nearly always very drinkable, and very often it is exceptional.
James has spent many years in France and knows the country and its appellations well. Our upcoming Great Wines of the World Asia events in Seoul, Hong Kong and Beijing, will also feature more than 40 of the best French wineries.

We have more than 22,000 tasting notes from French wines in our database, the second-highest number from a single country. Only Italy, where James now lives and tastes for much of the year, is represented more often. Of those, nearly 18,000 score 90 points or above. That means an amazing 81 percent of all French wines on the site rank as an A grade – or “outstanding” quality.
Nearly 3,000 score 95 points or above, meaning these are exceptional bottles and must-buys if you are serious about enjoying great wines. And that is more than Italy incidentally, which also has more than 2,000 95+ rated wines, but not as many as France.
French wines account for 750 wines rated 98 points or above, nearly 400 wines are rated 99 or above, and 188 wines rank as “perfect” with 100 points – that’s 100 more than Italy.
