In the past year, James tasted close to 130 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riservas and more than 210 2011 Brunello di Montalcinos. The 2010 riservas are described as the encore to Montalcino’s greatest vintage ever. In fact, they’re wines of a lifetime for many producers. Six of the wines received perfect scores, and only a handful were less than 90 points.
Overall, the 2010 Brunello Riservas show fantastic aromas, rich and ripe fruit character and fabulous freshness and linear definition. Although James enjoys drinking them now, many will be much better in three or four years.
As for the 2011 Brunellos, there’s no use in waiting. They are fruity and flavorful with soft tannins and medium acidity, good for drinking now. They show the ripness of the growing season.
