One of the most memorable wines I drank over the holidays was a 2002 Chateau d’Yquem Y Bordeaux. Most people call it “Ygrec,” meaning “Y” in French. It’s made of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
The dry white of the world’s most famous sweet wine producer is sometimes underwhelming, especially when young. It can seem slightly heavy and oxidized. My friend Pete Johnson of Tatuaje Cigars brought the Y for an aperitif to drink while viewing my documentary film in Los Angeles on Cuban cigars – “Cigars: The Heart and Soul of Cuba.” And it was everything but heavy handed. I decanted it before serving.
Here is my tasting note:
I am amazed by this. Usually the dry Yquem is rather oxidized but this is lush and delicious. It smells and tastes like dried pineapple and mango. Hints of yogurt too. Full and rich with an opulent finish. Loving it. Decant an hour before serving and don’t serve it too cold. 94 points.
