1977 Warre Vintage Port

I have to say that I don’t drink Vintage Port that often in the heat of the summer, but last night I did. I had some wine producers over for a barbecue at home, and after some Brunello and Bordeaux, the ice cream and cigars came out, and everyone said, “Vintage Port!”

I went down to my cellar and found a bottle of Warre 1977. I have always been a great fan of 1977, even though a number of Vintage Port aficionados say the vintage is overrated. I think that the wines will stay very much the same for decades ahead. This was true of such great vintages as 1963 and 1927.

Anyway, the Warre was beautiful now. It showed lots of dried fruits and Christmas cake character on the nose and palate. Medium sweet. It was full-bodied with loads of flavor and an intensely flavorful finish. It was perfect to drink. 94 points. Find the wine.

(The label of the bottle in the photo is not the normal label. I think this bottle came from the cellars of the Symington family in Porto years ago.)
