Spain: Empordá — Clos d’Agon

Clos d'Agon was founded in 1987 by a French couple who bought the estate and replanted it with French varietals. The winery is located in the north of Girona, Spain's last province before France, in the Empordá appellation. The top wines produced, however, are not labeled as the Empordá appellation because they are made with strictly French varietals. The white is a Rhone-inspired blend of roussanne, marsanne and viognier, while the red is a blend of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah and petit verdot. What is unique about the site is that the vineyard is surrounded by a dense pine forest and is just two kilometers away from the sea, creating a distinct microclimate.

In this video, Miguel Coronado, technical director at Clos d'Agon, explains the concept behind Clos d'Agon and what he looks for in the estate’s wines. Be sure to also see James’ tasting report on Spain.
