I was very sad to hear the news of the death of Luciano Sandrone, the Barolo master of Italy. He was 76 years old. I met him in the late 1990s and always enjoyed his warmth and wisdom.
He was so thoughtful with every question and explanation he gave me about his vineyards, wines and area. I was grateful for his guidance and friendship, especially during my early years in Italy as a wine critic and journalist.
The best moments together were in his vineyards, and his love for his vineyards radiated from his heart. We cut this segment of Luciano from our documentary about a decade ago on the Cannubi vineyard area of Barolo, “Cannubi: A Vineyard Kissed by God.”
The Sandrone winery has about two hectares of Cannubi Boschis. It was Luciano’s first vineyard when he started in the late 1970s. My heartfelt condolences to his family, whom I wrote to a few days ago in an email.
