Elio Altare is a benchmark for today’s reds of Piedmont, in particular Barolo. He and a group of friends, including Domenico Clerico and Roberto Voerzio, set out on a mutual path to producing better-made Barolos through more precise methods in their vineyards and wineries in the early 1980s – and they have never looked back. Elio, with the help of his daughter Silvia, continue to make pure and well-crafted Barolos that emphasize strength through finesse and beauty. Check out my discussion on their 2007 Barolos, and my tasting with Silvia in their winery below the village of La Morra in the heart of Barolo-making country. It’s one of numerous videos to come this week and next, as well as a large tasting report, of the excellent 2007 Barolo that are clearly better than the 2006s.
