I always enjoy looking over the world from the hilltop winery of Guido Fantino, who makes the wines of Conterno Fantino with Claudio Conterno. The Barolos of Conterno Fantino have a directness and seriousness that I like. They are always very perfumed but then deliver a firm tannin backbone with clear and precise fruit. They really show the special terroir and climate of their Barolo vineyards in the hillside of Ginestra, including Sori Ginestra, Vigna del Gris and Mosconi. I visited with Guido about a month ago and tasted his three Barolos in 2007. Check out what he had to say and take a quick look at the vineyard sites. I get the feeling you were a little disappointed with these wines,in past years the Sori Ginestra has performed very well. Should I read that "they are always very perfumed" as "not as nose led as expected driven by their fruit content instead.
