Barbaresco 2010: Produttori del Barbaresco

While 2010 Barolo has been called one of the best vintages ever, the story in Barbaresco was quite different. Produttori del Barbaresco, a cooperative with 56 producers and more than 100 hectares of planted vineyards, decided that in 2010 they would not "bottle and define their single vineyards" and instead would blend all the single vineyards into one Barbaresco label.

In this video, Aldo Vacca, managing director of Prodottori del Barbaresco, explains the motives behind this decision. A decisive event in the context of Prodottori's decision was three rainy days in September which, although did not induce Botrytis, resulted in a lack of concentration in the grapes. As Aldo describes it, the wine in 2010 "does not have the body or the structure we are used to in recent vintages."

One of the points to be made with this situation is that regardless of the proximity of Barolo, Barbaresco can produce different results during the same vintage. As Aldo puts it, "Although the general perspective is the same, and the two climates are similar, when it comes to the specifics of a vintage there may be some differences."

Watch the video and find out what older vintages remind Aldo of 2010 Barbaresco.

  1. 2010 produttori barbaresco normale should be pretty good as they are including their best vineyards. Costco has produttori normale for $24
  2. James Suckling says:
They only made normale in 2010. Buy it. Delicious wine.
