In this video, winemakers and owners of different estates in Barolo comment on the 2010 vintage. Although all agree that it is a great vintage, it is too early to say that 2010 is one of the greatest vintages ever. As James comments, "Many of them are drinkable now, like you taste them and you want to drink them right away." But he is convinced that it is not the greatest vintage of all time.
The growing season during 2010 was marked by a heavy rainfall in early May that delayed flowering, according to Franco Conterno, owner and winemaker at Poderi Aldo Conterno, which greatly reduced yields. The summer was hot, but with nighttime temperatures dropping significantly, the grapes were able to progressively ripen to an almost perfect balance. According to Pio Boffa, owner of Pio Cesare, 2010 was a vintage for the nebbiolo grape. The lack of any climatic excess, such as drought or extremely heavy rain fall, produced balanced and drinkable wines.
