La Serena is typical of many of the up-and-coming family-run wine estates in Montalcino. For years, the winery sold grapes to various other producers such as Barbi, but in the last decade the youngest son Andrea Mantengoli of La Serena took over the helm of the property and renovated everything from replanting vineyards to building a new winery. He grows his grapes organically and believes that quality comes 100 percent from the vineyards. I visited his old and new winery a few weeks ago in Montalcino, and I tasted his 2006 Brunello di Montalcino as well as a sample of the 2006 riserva from vat.
