Senior Editor Stuart Pigott and Tasting Manager Kevin Davy continued their Rhone research trip in the region’s rocky northern region with a number of mind-blowing tastings and four M. Chapoutier wines earning perfect ratings of 100 points.

The sheer variety at the top of our ratings for February is striking: we gave out perfect scores to six different types of wines from five countries. They included a chardonnay from Argentina, a syrah and two Bordeaux blends from Chile, a cabernet sauvignon from California, a riesling from Austria and a sparkling wine from Germany.

We rated 2,298 wines to kick off the first month of 2024, and came away with five perfect-scoring wines – four from Napa Valley’s 2021 vintage and one from Hungary. But what made Napa's 2021s so good?

High scores for Californian reds top the list in this Weekly Tasting Report, highlighting the greatness of the 2021 vintage for the state.

The JamesSuckling.com tasting team added another 561 wines to its early-year tally over the course of the past week as it spread out around the globe to bring you ratings from 12 countries, including such mainstays as the U.S., France and Australia all the way to China, Peru and Israel.

James kicked off the year in our office in Hong Kong tasting together with four of the JamesSuckling.com tasters/editors as well as our new executive editor, Jim Gordon. They dove deep into more than 200 Barolos, mostly from 2020, as well as a few dozen Barbarescos.

We rated 569 wines in our latest Weekly Tasting Report, with James coming across a couple of extraordinary old-vine pinot noirs in Martinborough, New Zealand.

Our final tasting month of the year at JamesSuckling.com comprised 3,130 wines, with France and the U.S. giving us a whopping 1,456 and 781 bottles, respectively, and putting our final tally for the year at nearly 40,000 wines tasted.
