There’s a big-picture concept to some of the top-scoring wines in this week’s report, with the perfect scores James gave to the wines of two well-kinown Tuscan producers underscoring a paradigm shift in how wineries are dealing with climate change.

Our June tastings of 3,414 wines from a staggering 22 countries included seven bottles we gave perfect scores to and 18 that notched 99s. The 100-pointers included three from Bordeaux – all 2021 Sauternes wines – two from Burgundy and two from California.

The “heat dome” that occurred in California in 2022 is easy to forget when you taste pinot noirs and chardonnays from top producers from such regions as Sonoma Coast, Russian River, Anderson Valley and Carneros, who all managed to make tensioned and focused wines despite the unique weather event.

Italy leads the way in our latest Weekly Tasting Report with some superb reds from various appellations, including Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Barolo, Chianti Classico, Bolgheri and Toscana, but right at the top sits the unique Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2015.

Senior Editor Stuart Pigott was in Alsace over the past week tasting the wines of the 2022 vintage from a row of top producers and was amazed by what he found.

We rated 3,847 wines from 16 countries in April, including 692 from Argentina, 443 from the United States and 417 from Italy, but it was in our tastings of 1,944 French wines where we really hit paydirt.
