1996 Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche

I am a great fan of the Montrachets from Joseph Drouhin. The wine is actually produced from vineyards owned by the Laguiche family, who own just over five acres of Montrachet vines. The Drouhins have been making the wines since the late 1940s. For me, it is the best value in Montrachet and consistently superb quality.

Anyway, I drank a bottle of 1996 Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche in Macau at the restaurant Don Alfonso 1890 at the Lisboa Hotel. It showed wonderful aromas of cream, light toffee, dried lemons, and apple crumble. It was very similar at first on the palate but then opened to a full body of lemon meringue and fresh citrus fruit character. It was so lively and intense. Racy and flavorful, it was a wonderful texture and length. Drink now. 96 points. It wasn’t showing any age. In fact, it seemed to get young in the class with air and a little warmth, even though it was decanted 2.5 hours in advance

I drank the Montrachet with a first coarse of tiny sautéed scallops in the shape of potato gnocchi with fresh sea urchin on top, served in a bed of warm squid ink sauce. What a combination!
