My Article: Thoughts on Napa Valley Cabernet

I have been back in Los Angeles a few days now from Napa Valley after tasting about 150 of the top names in Cabernet Sauvignon in the region, as well as other parts of California. My palate is finally back in shape. It needed a rest.

Honestly, I felt pretty beat up. A lot of the wines I tasted were just too much – too much alcohol, too much extract, and too much raisin character.

I wish some wine producers would curb back their apparent quest to making the biggest and baddest Cabernets. Who can drink the stuff?

This said, I found numerous very balanced and refined Cabernets from the 2008 vintage. (The bottle of Diamond Creek Gravelly Meadow is one example.) With a few exceptions, I don’t think anyone believes that 2008 is better than the highly touted 2007 vintage – but there are some exceptional wines made in 2008. In fact, I think that the cult legend Screaming Eagle is better in 2008 than 2007, just by a point.

And some other Cabernet makers are more inclined to their 2008 Cabs than their 2007s. “The pedigree sites always come through in a vintage, and in 2008 they did,” said Andy Smith, winemaker at Larkmead Vineyards. I really thought the 2008 Larkmead Cabernets showed a beautiful balance of fruit and tannins. “The 2008 was not obviously a great vintage like 2007 and 2009; 2008 was more of an introspective vintage. But the wines, more so than any vintage I worked with, changed dramatically in barrel. The leafiness changed to cassis and graphite and sweet tobacco, and the vineyard signature came out. The 2008 has the strongest vintage signature to it.”

Vintage signature is another way of saying that the wines are not dominated by that super ripe, full-blown style. I think many of us are looking for that in Napa Valley Cabernets – and red wines in general.

It is nice to hear your feedback on that James. I was told that this is a mostly a "style" that maybe will change? I thought it was me and my "tolerance" so to speak just changing on me at my age but a few percentage points higher seems to really make a huge difference doesn't it? Wine lovers love to drink their wine and it really does limit you when you are talking 15%+ alcohol.

I know what you are saying Rachel... it's not only wine drinkers loving to drink wine...wine is made to be drunk.

Couldn't agree more James. Also, it is great to see scores and notes by 'James Suckling' on shelftalkers and the like in the marketplace. Congrats, quite an accomplishment.

Thanks Brad. I am working hard!

    James,

When talking about ripeness it is always interesting to look at the CA Grape Crush Report. In 2007 the average Napa Cabernet came in at 25.5 brix. In 2008 it was 25.7 brix. Going back a decade, in 1997 it was 24.5 brix. Without any adjustment (and CA winemakers are told that we adjust everything), that would make the average 2008 Napa Cab 15.42 alcohol and the average 2007 Napa Cab 14.7 brix.

Just some facts that are always fun to look at and interpret.

How interesting Adam. Of course, that is the average. I am not against high alcohol wines if they are in balance, as you know.

    James,

I meant average 1997 Cabernet would be 14.7. The difference between 2007 and 2008 would be negligible.

    Sorry....

Thanks for the wonderful blog. It was nice to read about Larkmead Vineyards, and that they still are continuing to make elegant wines that translate the "partnership dance" that only a few talented winemaker/growers choose to do with the land, grapes, and vintage. I also love the fact that some of the 2008's are outshining the 2007's--reminds me of how it was in 1991's vs. the over-touted 1990 vintage from the same region. It's also good to hear that you and Mme. Harnois (Bonjour, ma petite ombre!) have recovered from the palate fatigue!

I've had a few Napa Cabernet '08's that were oak- bombs! I've also had a couple that were well-balanced, with the alcohol at around 15%. It's all about the harmony, just watch out for the overtly-ripe-wood-cabin-wines.

I look forward to your tasting notes, James!

Life can always be described with ZZ Top references!

California wines were all "Afterburner", leaving James and Jessica suggesting "Eliminator"

Keep it up Sharp Dressed Man.
