No country drinks more red wine than China where consumption of reds accounts for about 90 percent of the country’s total wine consumption. In 2013, more than 1.86 billion bottles of reds are sold in the country, eclipsing traditional wine-drinking countries including France and Italy, according to a report by International Wine and Spirit Research, a London-based research firm.
Chinese consumers’ appetite for wine is growing at a pace that is commensurate with the country’s wealth and its burgeoning middle class. The amount of wines drank by the Chinese grew 136 percent over just five years, a whopping number given that just 10 years ago, most of the consumers in the country do not know any wine-growing regions in France except Bordeaux. Today, they are the fourth largest export market for Burgundy right behind Japan, Britain and the US, and are drinking wines from Chile, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.
Admittedly, China’s anti-corruption campaign initiated two years ago has dampened the sales in luxury sector including luxury watches, cars and jewelry. High-end wine consumption was no exception. But despite the adverse impacts, wines, especially red wines are expected to climb up on Chinese’s drinking list, thanks to its auspicious color of red, a favorite in Chinese culture; its health benefits compared with throat-burning spirits and perhaps most importantly, a growing number of discerning consumers who essentially consider wine appreciation as a crucial gauge for quality of life.
In fact, the country’s wine consumption is expected to grow by 33.8 percent from 2013 to 2017, according to estimates by Vinexpo. And more encouraging is the forecast for the country’s high-end wine consumption, which is anticipated to register a 60 percent growth to 46 million cases by 2017, more than eight folds of the country’s projected 7 percent GDP growth rate during the same period.
