Hong Kong Wine Challenge: Grand Hyatt Steakhouse

While most are acquainted with the impressive Italian wines hosted in the wine cellar of the Hong Kong Grand Hyatt’s Italian restaurant Grissini’s, you’ll find that it is on the Grand Hyatt Steakhouse’s wine list that some of the most intriguing wines from around the world are found. With that in mind, James pays the carnivorous restaurant a visit to pose the Asia Tatler/Hong Kong Wine Challenge.

In the wine challenge, Inge Zwick, the manager of the steakhouse is asked for:

– two wines she feels are 90 points or above – cost HK$1,000 or below – and pairs well with the signature dishes at the said restaurant

James will then try the recommended wines and give his notes and scores awarded to each offering.

In this wine challenge, he was presented with the Bandol Domaine Tempier La Tourtine 2008 from Provence (HK$1,000, read note) and the Domaine Serene Yamhill Cuvee (HK$980, read note) – all the more exciting as the latter marks the first time an American wine was presented at the challenge. The liquid ambrosia was paired with a Canadian Angus Porterhouse Steak 38 oz with sides of duck fat fries, creamed spinach and glazed baby carrots, dishes which Inge Zwick specifically chose to magnify the flavor of the food. Watch the video above to see the final scores and to get the notes by James.
