Located in the famous Bolgheri district on Tuscany’s coastline, the estate of Tenuta Argentiera is neighbored by some of Italy’s most famous wineries: Guado al Tasso, Ornellaia and Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia). Back in Etruscan times, the plateau of the tenuta was rich in canals, natural springs and silver mines, the latter of which gives the estate its name.

Previously part of the old Donoratico estate, which once belonged to the rich, powerful Florentine Serristori family, the tenuta was owned by the Antinori family until 1999, when the current owners, Corrado and Marcello Fratini, bought part of it. The prime location is complemented by a world-class team led by Federico Zileri, the vineyard manager, and Stephane Derenoncourt, the famous Bordeaux consulting oenologist.

The estate produces several wines, one of which, the Bolgheri Superiore, is always a rich and silky red. Blended from cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, “the wines always have a harmonious, soulful nature to them,” comments James. Below are five of its Bolgheris that James tasted from the 2008 to 2012 vintage. Cracking wines offering so much more for your money than the well established names on Bolgheri which tend to score highly on reputation alone.
