A sellout crowd of almost 1,000 people attended this year’s Great Wines of Italy event at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong on December 5 tasting more than 230 outstanding quality wines from 77 of the leading names in Italian winemaking, including such greats as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Vietti, Luce, Tua Rita, and Roberto Voerzio. All the wines served at the event were rated 90 points by James Suckling, CEO of JamesSuckling.com and wine editor of Asia Tatler (which includes Hong Kong Tatler), and many were spotlighted in wine critic’s annual list of the “Top 100 Wines of the Year.”
“Hong Kong is the wine capital of Asia, and it continues to gain interest in great Italian wines,” says Suckling. “More and more trade members wish to attend the event to taste some of the best bottles on offer from Italy. We had to turn hundreds away. Meanwhile, there is a solid consumer base for Italian wines, as the event proves.”
Last week’s annual wine tasting was the third Great Wines of Italy event organized by JamesSuckling.com and Hong Kong Tatler. “We thought this year’s event was the best Great Wines of Italy ever,” says Barrie Goodridge, CEO of Edipresse Media Asia, owners of all Tatler magazines in the region. The nine editions of Tatler in such countries as China, Thailand, and Singapore attract more than 2.3 million readers.
A VIP dinner was held the night before the event at the Four Seasons featuring special wines from the 77 wineries served during a multi-course meal from the hotel’s three-star Michelin Chef Chan Yan Tak of Lung King Heen restaurant. The Hong Kong Ballet performed amazing duo performances during the evening to the chic crowd of vintners and readers of JamesSuckling.com and Hong Kong Tatler.
Next year’s Great Wines of Italy Hong Kong is already planned for December 4 as well as a Great Wine events for Bordeaux and Australia in March and April, respectively.
