Spain: La Rioja – López de Heredia's Cemetery

Like most traditional winemaking regions, Rioja is in constant flux. New trends in winemaking technology and technique have changed the paradigm a few times before. The traditional Rioja and the new Rioja coexist today with all kinds of in-betweens and personal interpretations of these two determinations. However, wineries like López de Heredia have maintained their approach to winemaking almost intact since inception.

Founded 130 years ago, López de Heredia wines are fermented in large and extremely old American oak vats and aged for a minimum of four years and a maximum of ten years. They make a range of wines all grown in their own vineyards, which, in Rioja, is a rarity. They also produce three white wines that have achieved legendary status around the world. Because of their stubborn insistence on maintaining tradition and respecting their history, the wines today have transcended style and achieved an individual status not only among other Riojas, but among the wines of the world.
