James recently visited Opus One Winery in Napa Valley, California, to taste 2022 (barrel), 2021 (barrel), 2020, and 2019 with winemaker Michael Silacci. Although James found 2020 to be "super fresh and aromatic" despite the difficult conditions of the year, including fires and the pandemic, he thinks 2021 is shaping up to be a more classic Napa vintage, like 2018 or 2016.
For Silacci, "I think it's going to be probably more similar to '18, but I think it really reminds me of 2005," he said. "2005 just has a beautiful balance, it has really nice intensity; I like that tightness, that balance between the acid and the tannins."
