Bolgheri: 2009 Ornellaia & 2009 Masseto

A few weeks ago James visited the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia estate in Bolgheri, where he met with Leonardo Raspini, agronomist and managing director at Orneallia, to taste its wines wines. James was particularly impressed by the Ornellaia 2009.

Ornellaia 2009 vintage is made up of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.

Masseto is a single varietal made up of 100% Merlot. Its superb quality derives from the quality of the soil of its plot. The vineyard, with an extension 6,63 hectares, is located on the slope of the Masseto Hill. The plot produces outstanding Merlot mainly because of the combination of the clay deposits that compose its soil and its capacity to retain moisture as well as its expositions to the sun.

Watch James and Leonardo discuss the intricacies of these these two wines in the 2009 vintage. Also, if you like these wines you should check the just released tasting report on Bolgheri.

Here are the notes for the wines:
