Castello Banfi: 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007

American-owned Castello Banfi is the leader in the production of Brunello di Montalcino. Banfi is the largest maker of Brunello and its blended Brunello is available all over the world. I consistently score it 90 points or more, although the Banfi single vineyard Brunellos such as the Poggio all'Oro and Poggio alle Mura always have a little more to them in the glass. I tasted a range of Brunellos with Enrico Viglierchio, the managing director of Banfi in Italy, including 2009, 2007, 2006, 2005, 1999. See which wines I like best.

What was up with the Oro 1999 James? Off bottle? Your previous reviews of it were quite positive.
    Thanks.

Not sure. I like that wine. It must have been slightly corked. I thought it was a little dry.

    Thanks James...
I will try one this weekend with a good amount of decanting and will provide my impressions.
I always thought the 99's were quite tough/tight wines. The '99 Castelgiocondo for example is just coming into it's own now. It's funny but there was a period, say two years ago, were I would have described the wine just as you described the "very dry" Oro. Wonder if it's not a bit of a vintage charater and the wines various stages of evolution? You would know far better than I.

    Hello James!
I was living in Tuscany in 2009 and I think it could be a great vintage for Tuscan wines we had great weather taht year.
2010 I´am not so sure very cold and rainny.

Thank you James for the tasting note. What this tasting before or after the Brunello report in January. I saw that you gave 2006 All Mura 96 there but only 92 here.

I tried the 1999 Alle Mura a year ago and also gave it a 95! What's a fabulous wine. I bought a few so I ended up gave a bottle to my college friend who we enjoyed Banfi wines together way back when as his wedding gift. :)
