I spent close to a whole day with Luca Currado, whose family owns the Vietti winery in Castiglione Falletto, Italy. Vietti is one of the top producers of Barolo, and the family owns some amazing vineyards, including its best for me: Rocche and Brunate. They make very different styles. I always find the Brunate a little more powerful and chewy than the Rocche, which is rounder and sexier. I tasted with Luca his top Barolos from the 2006 vintage, and we were in agreement that they were outstanding. Luca’s comment about how drinking 2006 Barolos is a little like driving a Ferrari still makes me laugh when I hear it.
