In Case You Missed It – Ornellaia: 2006, 2007, 2008

In Case You Missed It: Originally posted November 29th, 2010

This estate is one of the benchmarks for Italian wine, with its great Bordeaux blend of Ornellaia and pure Merlot Masseto. It first started making wine on the coast of Tuscany about an hour’s drive south of Pisa in 1985. That’s when I first visited the property. This time I drove over from my house near Arezzo and I tasted recent vintages of the first wine as well as the second called Le Serre Nouve with winemaker Axel Heinz. All the Ornellaias are fabulous quality.

    James;

    Was not the 2008 a better vintage in Bolgheri....than 2007 ?

    That's a tough call. In the end, it may be.

    James, I must applaud on the site. Your videos are great; they are a true pleasure to watch. Being an Italian Canadian living in Quebec, I visit relatives in Umbria and Tuscany once or twice a year. It's hard to resist staying away from the beautiful Italian peninsula! Being passionate for all that is Italian, wine is not an exception. I adore Super Tuscans such as Tignanello, Ornellaia and Sassicaia. In your opinion between 2007 and 2008 Ornellaia which do you say is a better buy at the moment in terms of present drinkability and aging potential. Keep up the great work James, you have lots of supporters here in Quebec.

    Matty. Go for the 2008. I think it has the edge. Sassicaia 2008 is also better than 2007 and 2006.
