On January 25 James conducted a Tasting Interview with Philippe Sereys De Rothschild and the team from Baron Philippe De Rothschild. They tasted a selection of wines and talked about the 2018 vintage, which resulted in some great wines despite some difficulties in the growing season. "It's amazing the wines came out so wonderfully," James said.
Baron Philippe De Rothschild's Estates Manager, Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, said he hasn't seen wines like these with such a balanced profile in the last 10 years. Philippe Sereys De Rothschild described the 2018 vintage as very dense, but added that he thinks the wines will age well and "open up, like a flower".
The highlight for James was the Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 2018, which he said was "phenomenal"; a harmonious wine with seamless tannins that coat the palate. Ariane Khaida, the head of chateaux for the Rothschild family of Mouton Rothschild, Clerc Milon and d’Armailhac, also joined the call.
James and Philippe had an interested conversation at the end of the video contemplating whether the 2018 Mouton will be the new 1959, which is one of the all-time greatest wines from Mouton.
