Last week James had an insightful Zoom tasting with Philippe Bascaules, managing director at Chateau Margaux. They tasted three 2018 wines - Château Margaux 2018, Pavillon Blanc 2018 and Pavillon Rouge 2018. Philippe pointed out that the grapes were so small and thick-skinned in 2018 that he didn’t need to extract much during fermentation and maceration. In fact, he didn’t pump over many vats. This resulted in balanced yet rich young wines.
