This summer my son Jack, Senior Editor Nick Stock and I tasted more than 2,100 wines while in Rioja at the Hotel Viura. It was a lot of wines to get through in about 10 days, but it was a great experience and the many excellent wines, meetings and tastings with winemakers from around Spain just reaffirmed to us that the country is making some of the most drinkable and characterful wines in the world at the moment.

Granted, there are the old school wines that have more in common with jam than wine and those were wines promoted and supported by a number of key people, particularly in the United States. But there seems to be a new classicism on the rise here, and each year of new releases we see more real wines with outstanding quality from key regions as well as lesser-known ones.
